Drew was born in St. Louis and raised at the geographic (and psychographic) confluence of America's North, South, East and West melting pot in Smalltown, Missouri, USA. Across the river, near the intersection of the Mississippi and the Ohio rivers is a bluff where his ancestor was stationed at Fort Jefferson during the American Revolutionary War.. The fort protected the far western edge of the fledgling United States from the British and the local Chikisaw Indians. His ancestor liked the area as it was rich with buffalo and fertile land, so after the revolution he sold 1500 acres in Louisville and moved the family downriver to the wild, wild west that is now Missouri. The area later became known as Matthews Prairie.
Drew's midwestern upbringing was fortuitous. It gave him a unique perspective on the many people, cultures, accents. values, traditions and history that all mushed together into the area like the swirling eddies of the Ohio blending with the Mississippi. The genteel South was just down the road in jazz laden Memphis, the official start of 'you-all' territory. The North was equidistant represented by 'youse guys' and the red brick industrialization of St. Louis. The East officially began across the river. And the West was framed through the St. Louis arch. Marketing became second nature as generations of family business owners passed down the skills of how to communicate across a broad swath of the different cultures and mindsets that passed through and inhabited the area.
Boyhood was Norman Rockwell ideallic and filled with Schwinn Stingrays, Man From Uncle TV, go-carts, boats with Mercury Hurricane Super 10's, more boats, canoes, planes (both balsa and real), motorcycles and assorted racing green British Leyland products in need of constant repair. A Fender Mustang, Wah-Wah pedal, Bandmaster amp and a couple truckloads of Tri-X coursing through a Pentax rounded out the inventory. A garage band that was best left in the garage occupied time. A black and tan hound dog of questionable lineage provided companionship and one bazillion cousins stretching out to the 5th degree provided a built in compound of friends. Family farmland had three native American mounds left over from the ancient Mississippi mound building culture and they proved a fertile ground for adventures, camp outs, arrowhead hunting, discharging firearms, horseback riding, blowing up unopened cans of Vienna Sausage over the campfire, tooling around on a vintage Massey-Furgeson and other assorted mischievous endeavors lying outside the boundaries of parental oversight.
UNIVERSITY TRAINED UNDER THE TUTELAGE OF DR. FRANK PAONI University was a fortuitous time that provided the truly privileged opportunity to learn from the acknowledged master of marketing and marketing psychology in the world at the time, Dr. Frank Paoni whose PhD in psychology and marketing genius propelled Anheiser-Bush and others to stardom worldwide.
Drew decamped to Texas to marry his college sweetheart who had taken up post -graduate residence doing biochemical genetic research at the local university. He married up. She obviously took in a stray.
Coming from an unbroken line of family self-employed business owners stretching back to the 1600's seemed to genetically predestine the opening of The Matthews Group on January 5th, 1987. The family handbook on how to be a successful entrepreneur was lost for the first few years until things got dialed in.
The intent was to get back to the family camp in Smalltown, USA. Didn't happen. Two daughters, assorted cats, two Russian dogs and a French sailboat with a smoky Swedish engine later, the stomping ground is now officially a three hour drive around another small town 90 minutes North of Houston, TX or anywhere a flight goes out of IAH and as far as he and his wife can sail on a weekend and still make it back by Sunday night.
Challenged in the handsome category, Drew is used to mothers shielding their small children's eyes from his ugly visage to risk young tot sudden crying sprees. Fortunately this developed his observation skills which have been honed to a fine edge in creating marketing.
I'm still surprised that my obsessive compulsive nature has somehow manifested itself into a career. If I'm awake, I have to be making things. (Which has resulted in my being an indecisive creative hybrid of sorts). I like to make stuff. Stuff like:
AD STUFF: I'm currently the owner, President, Designer, Creative Director, Grand Poo-Bah of The Matthews Group. Prior to my 31+ years at The Matthews - hmmm, that seems like A WHILE - I also had the pleasure of working for Hart Hanks, Texas A&M University and one agency gig . Over those years, I've had the honor of serving numerous brands I truly admire.
What do I do for clients? Everything. Making brands relevant, iconic, personal. Creating & executing content with a sharp and sticky point of view. Local. Global. Functional. Shareable. Emotional. Social experiments. Products. Collaborations. Immersive Experiences. Inspired by raw human insights and fearless design. Tuned into women, men, kids, metrosexual, conservatives, liberals, millennials, makers. Giving brands a meaningful voice and an evocative look and feel. Building everything from a new product to a new business pitch. Moving brands and people to a better place.
Who do I make it for? Everyone. My brand. Your brand. From buzz-generating event, to a creative retreat, a creative product, or an immersive environment.
Where do I make it? Everywhere. In your house. In my house. On a Tuesday or a Sunday. On the L. On a plane. With zero learning curve or drama. On strategy and on time. Sell in the meeting and on the rack. Working the work hard to put out ideas that are smart, beautiful, and surprising every time.
WRITE STUFF: It's out there.
DESIGN STUFF: Every odd thing imaginable. Some not so odd.
BUILD STUFF: Built a business and brand out of nothing. Also, general contractor to assorted projects.
PERSONAL STUFF: Midwest boy from Southeast Missouri, now living in Texas with my wife Yvonne and our assorted, ever stylish cat menagerie.
MENTOR & STUFF: Sometimes get to speak at cool conventions, annual meetings, college campuses and clubs. Have judged assorted advertising award shows and occasionally mentor design and ad students from Texas A&M University.
